Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) β core

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced primarily by placental trophoblasts during pregnancy. It is composed of two noncovalently associated subunits, an α-subunit and a β-subunit. The β-subunit confers much of the hormone's biological and immunological specificity.
The hCG β-core fragment (β-core) is a major urinary degradation product derived primarily from the β-subunit of hCG. It is generated through proteolytic processing of hCG and related β-subunit forms and can be present at significant levels in urine, particularly during pregnancy. Because the β-core fragment shares structural features with the hCG β-subunit, antibodies specifically recognizing β-core epitopes are valuable tools for studying hCG metabolism and degradation products.
